Festive lanterns are an ancient traditional handicraft of the Han people. In earlier times, around the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, people would hang red lanterns symbolizing reunion to create a joyful atmosphere. Over thousands of years, lantern-making has developed distinct regional styles and diverse artistic forms.

Traditional materials include paper, bamboo, silk, and wood, while modern designs may use plastic, cellophane, or acrylic. In fact, any material that allows light to pass through can be used, with fruits, discarded cartons, and aluminum cans among them, giving lanterns endless room for creativity.

In the hands of children, festive lanterns often take the form of endearing animals such as rabbits, tigers, or sheep. The children put on beautiful clothes and carry the lanterns in their hands. Each glowing lantern looks like a little firefly in the dark night, and the different shapes also express the lantern bearers'' wishes for the New Year.
